A restored private castle on Ardmucknish Bay contains traces of an older religious site beneath it. Lochnell Castle, also known as Lochnell House, is a 16th-century castle and later manor house near Benderloch.
Its story layers a St Columba cell, a medieval chapel, Campbell and Cochrane family ownership, fires, a yew staircase tradition and modern private use. The castle remains a residence, wedding venue and Honorary Consulate of Chile.

History
Lochnell Castle stands on Ardmucknish Bay near Benderloch. The earliest recorded occupation on the site dates to around the 6th century with a St Columba cell.
Parts of the cell are still visible in the undercroft of the chapel and under the main castle. A medieval chapel behind the castle was built in the 15th century.
Archibald Campbell, 5th Earl of Argyll, built Lochnell Castle in 1587. The house was built by Sir Duncan Campbell, 7th of Lochnell.
The castle served as the family seat of Clan Campbell of Lochnell. It was altered and enlarged around 1737-1739 and remodelled as a Georgian manor house around 1818-1820.
A fire damaged the castle in the second half of the 19th century, after which it was mostly restored. Thomas Cochrane, 13th Earl of Dundonald, bought the estate in 1912.
The estate was requisitioned as a brigade headquarters during the Second World War. The castle is now a private residence, wedding venue, family seat of Clan Cochrane and Honorary Consulate of Chile.
Lochnell Castle is a Category A listed building.
