Ruined walls above the Sound of Mull mark Aros Castle near Salen, where a medieval stronghold watched one of the island’s main sea routes. The castle, also known as Dounarwyse, began as a 13th-century hall-house with a bailey, an enclosed outer yard.
Its control moved through MacDougall, MacDonald and Maclean histories. Later accounts describe it as decayed and weak, yet it was still useful enough to be garrisoned in 1690.

History
Aros Castle was probably built by a MacDougall lord of Lorn in the 13th century.
By the late 14th century it was recorded as Dounarwyse Castle in the possession of the Lords of the Isles.
After the MacDougalls backed the losing side in the conflict between Edward I and Robert de Brus, their lands were forfeited.
King Robert gave the castle to Angus Og of Islay, Lord of the Isles, and Clan Donald.
The castle served as an occasional base for the Lords of the Isles in the late 14th and 15th centuries.
Clan Maclean gained the castle after MacDonald lands were forfeited.
Lord Ochiltree entertained Island chiefs at Aros in 1608 before imprisoning them.
The castle was described in 1688 as ruinous, old and useless, but was garrisoned by Argyll's troops in 1690.
