Castle Law, Forgandenny

Castle Law crowns high ground above Forgandenny, and is also known by the name of the summit it occupies, Culteuchar Hill. It is a hillfort — one of the many defended sites that ring the uplands of Perth and Kinross — and archaeologists class it in two ways at once: as a contour fort, whose ramparts follow the natural line of the hilltop, and as a multiple-enclosure fort, ringed by more than one circuit of earthworks. Little of its story survives in the written record; what marks it out today is the scale and layering of its defences rather than any single event or owner. The site is recognised nationally, scheduled as a monument by Historic Environment Scotland since June 1964, and appears in both the national Canmore database and the Atlas of Hillforts. Reaching it means a climb into open, rough ground, and the reward is less a standing ruin than a reading of the land itself: banks and ditches shaped to the contour of the hill, and a wide outlook over the valley the fort was raised to watch.
