Armadale Castle

Armadale Castle stands on the Sleat peninsula of the Isle of Skye, looking east across the Sound of Sleat. Despite its castellated appearance, it was never a defensive stronghold. A mansion house first rose here around 1790, and in 1815 the Edinburgh architect James Gillespie Graham added an adjoining Tudor-Gothic wing — a mock-castle built for display rather than warfare. The house served as a seat of the MacDonald family, the Clan Donald whose lordship once dominated the western seaboard. After a fire in the 1850s, a replacement central wing was designed by David Bryce, one of Scotland’s leading Victorian architects. The family left around 1925, and the building slipped steadily into ruin. In 1971 the southern Gillespie Graham sections were demolished, leaving only Bryce’s roofless wing and a two-storey northern portion standing today. The surrounding gardens, laid out over generations, are recognised as a nationally important Designed Landscape. The wider estate now hosts the Clan Donald Centre and the Museum of the Isles, telling the story of the clan and the Lordship of the Isles. In March 2025 the Clan Donald Lands Trust announced that the 20,000-acre Armadale Estate would be offered for sale, citing financial pressures.
