A rocky headland between Carradale harbour and Port Righ carries the remains of Airds Castle, looking out across Kilbrannan Sound to Arran. The ruin is a medieval castle whose position marked a strategic edge between island lordship and royal power.
The castle passed through the hands of the Lords of the Isles, the Crown, Ayrshire landholders and Kintyre’s MacDonalds. Its surviving fabric is slight, but the place still reads as a coastal watchpoint.

History
Airds Castle was held by the Lord of the Isles until the late 15th century.
The castle defended a border between lands of the Lord of the Isles and the King's lands.
After the late 15th century it passed to the King.
James IV granted the castle in 1498 to Sir Adam Reid of Stairquhite and Barskimming.
By the mid-16th century the lands formed part of the barony of Bar in North Kintyre, held by the MacDonalds of Dunnyveg.
By 1605 the castle was back in the Reid family of Barskimming.
Airds Castle became a scheduled monument in 1972.
