It is one of Scotland's most recognisable castles, a thirteenth-century Highland stronghold destroyed in the 1719 Jacobite rising and painstakingly rebuilt in the twentieth century.
Eilean Donan Castle stands on a small tidal island where three sea lochs — Duich, Long and Alsh — meet in the western Highlands, roughly a kilometre from the village of Dornie. A large curtain-wall castle was raised here in the earlier thirteenth century, during the reign of Alexander II. It became a stronghold of Clan Mackenzie, whose allies of Clan MacRae served as their bodyguards, a role that earned them the epithet of the Mackenzie’s shirt of mail. In April 1719 Spanish troops garrisoned the castle during a failed Jacobite rising. On 10 May that year three Royal Navy frigates — Worcester, Flamborough and Enterprise — bombarded it, and after its capture the fabric was demolished when its store of gunpowder was set off. The ruin lay abandoned for two centuries. Between 1919 and 1932 Lieutenant-Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap rebuilt it, engaging the Edinburgh architect George Mackie Watson. The restoration added an arched stone bridge linking the island to the shore and established a memorial to the MacRae men who fell in the First World War. The rebuilt castle opened to the public in 1955 and has since become one of Scotland’s most visited.
